We're more than just volunteers ~

we're the community!

For over 50 years, The Volunteer Center of the Virginia Peninsula has served as the central clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities where nonprofits, schools and local governments get skilled volunteers to help with programs throughout the Peninsula.  Are you aware that The Volunteer Center has a much broader spectrum of services behind the scenes?  Recruiting and convening the Local Food and Shelter Board (FEMA), the Center coordinates the dispersing of federal funds - already almost $200,000 in 2010 - to other nonprofits to feed and shelter those in need in our community.  Ongoing support is provided to volunteer managers throughout the region through the Volunteer Management Training Series as well as a monthly networking luncheon.  Working in cooperation with the VOAD committee and EOC disaster coordinators, The Volunteer Center recruits and places skilled volunteers for disaster recovery efforts including Hurricane Isabel and the more recent Nor'Ida.  The Center partners with local groups and faith congregations in disaster preparedness and response and provides disaster training at the local, state and national level.  Senior sensitivity training offered by the Center is designed to help agencies and businesses experience first-hand how older customers may be experiencing life's challenges of aging. The Volunteer Center administers the SafeAssured ID Program to identify vulnerable seniors and children in cooperation with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and helps keep them safe through a computer based program.  The Volunteer Center promotes youth volunteerism through coordination with local schools, nonprofit youth programs and communities of faith.  This year the Center was  chosen as a lead agency for Global Youth Service Day.
